Kiribati has few natural resources. Commercially viable phosphate deposits on Banaba were exhausted at the time of national independence. The economy today resolves around fisheries, coconuts (copra) and labour exports; are primary exports. A large portion of its revenue/income comes from abroad through fishing licenses, development assistance, tourism and worker remittances. Kiribati has a limited domestic production ability, hence import of nearly all of its foodstuffs and manufactured items is a must for Kiribati.
