GETTING TO KIRIBATI (TARAWA, GILBERT ISLANDS AND KIRITIMATI ISLAND, LINE ISLANDS)

Fiji Airways

  • Tarawa Flights (Gilbert Islands) Fiji Airways flies to Tarawa on Mondays & Thursdays out of Nadi, Fiji, and returns to Nadi on those same days.
  • Kiritimati Island Flights (Line Islands) Fiji Airways departs Nadi (Fiji) on Tuesday at midnight for Kiritimati Island. Arrives at Kiritimati on a Wednesday and continues to Honolulu. Arrives Honolulu on Tuesday (crosses IDL) and returns back to Kiritimati (Wednesday) and continues back to Nadi Fiji on the same day.

    Fiji Airways code shares with Qantas and Cathay Pacific with connections available from United States (Honolulu, LA & San Francisco), Australia (Brisbane, Sydney & Melbourne), New Zealand (Auckland, Wellington & Christchurch), Hong Kong, Tokyo and Singapore.

Nauru Airline

  • Nauru Airlines operates 2 weekly services into Tarawa. Mondays out of Brisbane (via Nauru) to Tarawa and continues to Kiritimati Island. And Fridays out of Brisbane and Nadi (via Nauru) and onward to Tarawa, Majuro, Pohnpei and vice versa back to Tarawa and onwards back to Brisbane.

Getting to the Outer Islands

Air Kiribati Domestic Flights

  • Air Kiribati is the flag carrier of the Republic of Kiribati and operates scheduled passenger services in the Gilbert Islands (Tarawa to 16 Gilbert outer islands), and within the Line Islands (from Kiritimati Island to Fanning and Washington Atolls). It is headquartered at Bonriki International Airport on the capital island of Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands. The airline is also available for national and regional charter flights.

Travel by Boat (Ferry)

  • North Tarawa Ferries to North Tarawa are available from Bairiki Wharf in South Tarawa. It is advised you go on the ferries marked ‘MV JR OBETA 1’ or ‘MV JR OBETA 2’. The ferry schedule is normally every day except Saturdays, departing around 12pm or 1pm, hence it is advised to be at the wharf around 11:00am. Return ferries from North Tarawa are in the morning around 7 or 8am.
  • Outer Islands Scheduled ferry services (Coral Seas Ferry and Lyke It Ferry) are available only from South Tarawa port to Abaiang Island, Maiana Island, and Marakei Island in the Gilbert Islands. Hotels and local inbound tour operators may assist with booking the Ferry.
Getting Around
  • Rental Cars Are available only in South Tarawa (the capital) and Kiritimati Island. Visitors can arrange their rental cars with hotels upon or before arrival in Tarawa and Kiritimati Island.
  • Bus Service Bus service is available in South Tarawa (the capital) and Kiritimati Island. Vans (18–20-seater) and a few larger buses serve as an inexpensive mode of public transport. Buses can be flagged at designated bus stops. If they sound their horn or flash their light, it means they are full so just wait for another bus to come along. To disembark, simply shout the word ‘I-kai’ or ‘Stop Here’.
  • Motorbike Hire Motorbike is a popular and convenient means of getting around on the outer islands which can be arranged with the hotels or the local government offices (Island Council).
  • Truck Hire Truck hire is a common mode of transportation on the outer islands. Trucks can accommodate small and large groups travelling around an island. It can be arranged with the hotels or the local government offices (Island Council).
