FISHING & MORE FISHING

Kiritimati Island is a world class fishing destination; the fishing here ranges from salt fly fishing on the flats, offshore game fishing, spear fishing and kayak fishing. The fly fishing is practically on the endless flats with remarkable numbers of cruising bonefish, giant trevally, trigger fish and milkfish. Not mention the fishing guides are experts who know their craft with years of experience in the business. They are always producing a big difference in fishing as they know their own flats, tides, reefs, waters, and fish. Their eagle eyes can spot the fish in any kind of condition. The salt water fly fishing on the island is all catch and release to protect and conserve the bonefish.

With more fishing; Kiritimati Island offers great offshore blue water game fishing as well. Here marlin, sailfish, tuna, wahoo, mahimahi, bass and giant trevally roam the waters of Kiritimati Island in large numbers. With great catch rates there is always a chance of hooking that trophy fish.

Nevertheless, Holiday fishing on Kiritimati is offered as a 7 nights (6 days fishing) holiday fishing package with full board accommodation and transfers to offer anglers that fulfilling fishing experience and a well-deserved fishing holiday they have always been planning for. SCUBA DIVING & SNORKELLING

Scuba diving and snorkeling in world’s largest coral atoll is available year-round but the best conditions are April through November. Diving here offers great encounters with beautiful coral ecosystems and abundance of underwater marine life giving you the opportunity for a breathtaking undersea exploration. There are also the Poland under waters caves and wrecks you can explore at the Bay of Wrecks.

Diving and snorkeling are available, with transportation and accompaniment by dive masters to known dive sites and yet-to-be-discovered locations. Diving is normally conducted from custom-built 38-ft outrigger canoes or fiber glass dive boats.

Visibility ranges from 10 to 30 metres with water temperatures around 25 to 28°C. Dive conditions tend to be gentle and appropriate for all diver experience levels.

The currents flow in some locations and dive sites. Whilst diving explore the amazing walls, pinnacles, spurs and groove formations. The waters of the atoll teem with colorful reef fish that dart around the beautiful rainbow-colored coral. It is a sight to behold. Many varieties of angelfish, butterfly pairs, triggerfish, puffers and parrotfish. You'll add plenty of species to your life list on this trip (such as the flame angel, dragon moray or an oscillated lionfish). At the Poland area and Bay of Wrecks you can encounter the big wrasse and groupers. You will also encounter a school of manta rays, witness a wall of lionfish, laugh with acrobatic spinner dolphins, glide with sea turtles, and encounter pelagics every day.

The numbers of small to medium tropical fish abound in Kiribati. On many or the reefs I saw two to three times the number of tropical fish than I have seen in Palau. You will see Sturgeonfish, Peacock Flounders, Nudibranches, Giant Barracudas, Spotted eagle rays, Snappers (many to choose from), Moorish idols, Trevally’s, Mantas, Octopus, Dolphins, Occasional sharks etc. etc. I did not get to see the all the big stuff….They were out in the Poland area or Bay of Wrecks. That is where the Big Wrasse and the Groupers are.”

SURFING & KITE SURFING KIRITIMATI

SURFING

Kiritimati is host to a golden five kilometer stretch of beach broken by points, reefs and channels between Ronton village and Paris point. This stretch is reputed to have a huge 24 surfable breaks - Surf season, October through to March. The swell hits Kiritimati about a day or two after it hits Hawaii - an 8' to 12' swell at Sunset Beach in Hawaii will result in 6' to 10' clean faces in Kiritimati one to two days later. Of the 24 breaks, two thirds are user friendly with deep channels and sand of soft reef bottom. The other third have rough coral bottoms and are for experienced surfers only. The best thing about surfing Kiritimati Island is simply because you don’t have to worry about water crowds; it’s your wave, it’s your surf.

KITE SURFING

Kiritimati Island has incredible kitesurfing with constant winds and endless lagoon flats. Recently it's been said to be “the best flat water kitesurfing discovery so far” due to our reliable winds and our vast, unique & totally uncrowded inner lagoon.

MANTIS SHRIMP HUNTING

Mantis Shrimps are known to burrow on the sand flats of Kiritimati Island. During fishing trips you can always ask the fishing guides to hunt for these shrimps. The mantis shrimps of Kiritimati are huge measuring up to 12 to 13 inches and the best part catching these shrimps is eating them once they are cooked. They are best tasting shrimp on the planet… period. The shrimp has very sharp slicers which can severely lacerate your fingers so it is encouraged that you observe rather than to try and catch one.

Christmas Island Warbler
(BOKIKOKIKO)

The bokikokiko, Kiritimati reed warbler or Christmas Island warbler is a species of warbler in the family Acrocephalidae. It is found only on Kiritimati.
