Consistent year-round weather, endless hard sand flats, and magnificent numbers of cruising Bonefish and Trevally- making it ideal for the serious angler. What makes the fly-fishing so special and extraordinary is the natural and raw power of the bonefish and giant trevally ‘GTs’ – it can fight so hard with so much strength that it makes the anglers work twice as hard. Fanning Island (Tabuaeran) Fishing
The beautiful tropical island, Fanning is a newly explored salt-water fly fishing destination situated Northwest of Kiritimati Christmas Island in Line Islands group of Kiribati. To get to Fanning Island you will have fly domestically or by charter flight from Kiritimati Island.
Fanning has very good populations of fish and these fish are aggressive. It's has a perfect habitat for a variety bonefish, giant trevally, parrotfish, napoleon wrasse, and more, and they've never seen an artificial fly before. The flats in the lagoon are composed of smooth, hard white sand that stretch for miles. The average bonefish is 3-5 pounds, while true bonefish monsters of 10-12 pounds have landed. Everyone wading the flats of Fanning has a chance at a true trophy bonefish.
At the same time, it is a very unique fishery, quite a bit different from neighboring Kiritimati Christmas Island. As Fanning Island fishery becomes more and more discovered, the guides and local communities will be able to gain more experience, and the fishing on Fanning Island is only going to get better and better.

Kanton Atoll also known as Canton in the Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA) of Kiribati, a UNESCO World Heritage is the ultimate world class Giant Trevally fishing destination. Not only is it creeping with abundant GTs but bonefish, dog tooth, Napoleon and surgeon fish.
Kanton Island (PIPA) is one the most remote islands of the South Pacific. To get here will takes some serious connections and planning. Kanton Atoll has been identified by Rock Expeditions as a destination of world significance for the purposes of catch and release sport fishing activities. “Kanton Atoll remains as one of the last havens on earth with no regular and sustainable access, shielded from the modern world. This remoteness, coupled with official world heritage status, this atoll of Kiribati has one of the healthiest fisheries and most virgin ecosystem to still exist on this planet...
Kanton is set amongst the historic ruins of WW2, once a base for U.S and British armed forces. Today Kanton is under the care taking of small a Kiribati Community (around 50 people) most of them Kiribati government workers and their families. Kanton is also managed and administered by PIPA Implementation Office (PIO) by the Government of Kiribati. Hence, accessing Kanton (PIPA) will require obtaining permit.
