About

Abemama (Apamama) is an atoll, one of the Gilberts group in Kiribati, and is located 152 kilometres (94 miles) southeast of Tarawa and just north of the Equator. The name Abemama means land of the bright moon. Abemama has an area of 27.37 square kilometres (10.57 square miles) and a population of 3,589 as of 2015. The islets surround a deep lagoon. The eastern part of the atoll of Abemama is linked by causeways making road travel possible between the different islets. The outlying islands of Abatiku and Biike are situated on the southwestern side of the atoll. The atoll of Abemama is part of central Gilbert group with it’s neighboring islands Kuria and Aranuka located south west of it. These 3 islands were once ruled by King Binoka. Abemama has one main island and two islets, Abatiku (meaning land to stay) and Biike (meaning beach).

Abemama Hotel (Island Council Guesthouse)

Is run and operated by the Island Council and is situated on the breezy ocean side of Kariatebike village. Accommodation is a guesthouse with rooms and local kiakias (thatched roof and raised floor). All rooms and kiakias have mattresses, beddings, and mosquito netting. There are 2 bathrooms and toilets for guests to share. Getting there

Air Kiribati operates flights from Tarawa every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. Flight time is approximately 30-35 minutes on the Twin Otter and 20-30 minutes on Dash 8. The return airfare from $190.00 and for booking can be made through Email.
