About
Nikunau is also one of the southern islands of the Gilbert Group and the sixth (6) biggest in the country.
The island is splits into two parts connected by a narrow strip of land in the middle, with the northern part accommodating the main service of infrastructures and the villages of Muribenua, Tabutoa, Rungaata and Mwanriiki, while the Southern part consist of Nikumanu and Tabomatang. Nikunau was discovered in 1765 by Captain John Byron on his ship H.M Dolphin. According to literature, Nikunau is the second island to be discovered in Kiribati after the discovery of Butaritari in 1606 by the Spanish explorer Pedro Fernandex de Quiros. (Wayne H. Brimmel 2005).

What's Unique About Nikunau Island?
Unlike other Southern-most island with no lagoon in the Gilbert region, Nikunau is the only surrounding fringing reef with several landlocked, hyper-saline lagoons located within the island, where milkfish are cultured. The tip of the island, close to the airstrip, has the largest waves on the island, where two tides meet, clashing one wave with another, thus creating strong tides and waves just a perfect place for a surf.
