TAMANA ISLAND
About
Tamana is the second-southernmost and the smallest island in the Gilbert group.
Tamana like Arorae island has no lagoon and is surrounded by reef. The 3 villages Barebuka, Bakaaka and Bakarawa are situated on the southwestern part of the island. The government station along with facilities, medical center and school are situated at Bakaaka village.
The island was first sighted by the Spanish who were the first European to sight the island in 1606. In the late 1800s Tamana islanders were often taken against their will to work abroad, by black birders. The time of black-birding ended when the London Missionary Society arrived on the island to preach Christianity in 1870.

What's Unique About Tamana Island?
Tamana men are known to be of good fishermen and possess unique methods and techniques in fishing. It is the only island in Kiribati that does not allow fishing boat with engines to fish in the island vicinity.
Tamana, like Arorae, only belonged to the Kiribati Protestant Church. A monument was erected to honor the promise made between the islanders and Missionary that there will be no other religion on Tamana but the Protestant Church only.
