On 11 March 2020, the World Health Organisation declared the rapidly spreading coronavirus outbreak a pandemic, acknowledging that the virus will likely spread to all countries on the globe.

Following a cabinet meeting on Sunday 22 March 2020, the government of the Republic of Kiribati declared the 5 different levels of coronavirus alert that will categorise the type of response expected from all stakeholders in the country.

In response, the Tourism Authority of Kiribati (TAK) has created this staff briefing paper to assist you to respond quickly to this health emergency and take the preventative steps to protect your guests, staff and business.

What is Coronavirus?

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a new virus. The disease causes respiratory illness (like the flu) with symptoms such as a cough, fever, and in more severe cases, difficulty breathing. You can protect yourself by washing your hands frequently, avoiding touching your face, and avoiding close contact (1 meter or 3 feet) with people who are unwell.

 

How is it Spread?

Coronavirus disease spreads primarily through contact with an infected person when they cough or sneeze. It also spreads when a person touches a surface or object that has the virus on it, then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth.

 

How can I protect myself and prevent spreading the virus?
