A Reset Kiribati Initiative

What is Mauri Mark?

The Mauri Mark is Kiribati’s National Tourism Standards Programme for all visitor accommodations and tourism enterprises including restaurants and bars, tourism leisure crafts, dive operators and an industry wide customer service program called the Mauri Way. It is designed to ensure high level of security, safety and to improve visitor experience.

The Mauri Mark program will therefore evolve from the accommodation only industry rating system that was introduced in 2008 to now include other tourism service providers.

It is based on the compliance standards developed in partnership with Kiribati’s Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS), Ministry of Fisheries and Marines Resources Development (MFMRD) and the Ministry of Information, Communication, Transport and Tourism Development (MICTTD) and the Tourism Authority of Kiribati (TAK) is mandated under the Tourism Act 2018 to manage this program.

Tourism Services that will be assessed

Accommodation

Kiribati currently has 6 accommodation types. These include hotel, guest house, self-contained apartment, island bungalow, homestays, and Airbnb. The Mauri Mark program will review, and rate accommodation based on safety, guest comfort and support services.

Restaurants & Bars

These include places where meals and drinks are served for both foreign and local visitors, including standalone restaurants and those that are part of an accommodation establishment.

Dive Operators

This includes commercial dive operations scuba and recreational dives. Assessment for this category will include aspects of training and personnel certification, equipment and gear, and public liability cover.

Tourism Leisure Crafts

These include boats for leisure purposes such as cruising, sport fishing, scuba diving, pedal boards, kayaks, wind surfing and traditional canoes. Crafts will be categorized either as motorized or non-motorized. Compliance requirements for all crafts will be based on the Marine Divisions regulations.

Mauri Way

Mauri way is an industry wide program which aims to develop a customer service culture across the tourism industry that is built on the traditionally warm and genuine hospitality of IKiribati people. Primary to this category will be the development and delivery of the Mauri Way customer service training program to all tourism stakeholders and partners. Individuals that complete this program will effectively become Mauri Way Ambassadors.
